| 01 | WHAT DOES TEJANO MUSIC MEAN TO YOU? | |||||
|
For some people its music to dance to. For some its music to drink to. But for myself it means alot more. I grew up listening to the music. While I was growing up I never knew there was any other type of music except Tejano. My father was a musician so that was all we listened to. I remember staying with my grandmother and aunts in a small town in south Texas called Taft. My aunts would work at a place called the Stardust Ballroom(in Corpus Christi). That's where I met singers such as Carlos Guzman, Sunny Ozuna, Augustine Ramirez, Mingo Saldivar(now there was an accordion player). Tejano music has been around so long that it became a part of our daily life. Somewhere along the way we seem to have forgotten our roots. A few weeks ago I was at the September the 16Th fiesta downtown main street in Ft. Worth. The Latin Breed was there. Which by the way they are just as good as they were in the 70's. Now that's an awesome band. David Lee Garza was there. Not much needs to be said about him since he's turned out singers such as Emilio Navaira and Jay Perez(excellent musicians). The one thing that bothers me the most about that day is that when The Hometown Boys(one of the nicest musicians one will ever come across) were on stage they were being rushed off. They couldn't even get a bottle of water. Now here we bring these bands out on a hot day to perform(and it was hot that day) and they couldn't even get some water while they were performing. The worst part was that they were rushed to finish and cut their performance short so that they could bring up a wanna be rapper on stage that was using bad language and there were small kids there. After all it was a family event. Make a long story short it was September 16Th people were there to hear Mexican music not rap music. I understand that they were trying to appeal to a younger crowd. But you would be surprised how many younger teens are into Tejano music. I have nieces and nephews ranging from 3yrs to 27yrs and they were there to listen to the Tejano bands not the rapper with bad language. Unfortunately alot of people there left when the Hometown boys were rushed off stage like that. I know the promoters of the event had to have thought "Oh my what did we just do". Because I wasn't a promoter but I asked myself "What in the world did they just do. Don't these people know how good the Hometown Boys are. And how important it was that they were there. Especially since it was the first time back since they lost Ricky(God rest his soul). I just hope that the Hometown Boys are willing to come back to Ft. Worth and perform again. David Lee and Jay Perez were awesome as usual. But The Latin Breed, well my heart was just full of Hispanic pride just listening to them. My nieces and nephews were glued to the stage listening. Well hopefully next year will be a little more organized. And believe me when I say teens want to hear more Tejano music cause I've asked many teens and they all have the same answer "TEJANO IS THE BOMB". Very few people can appreciate good music. But just try and listen with your heart and remember where you came from. Remember your roots. Remember our Grandparents and Great Grandparents and what it meant to them. If they didn't appreciate it then we would never have known or heard of Tejano music. So to all of you reading this article just try listening with your heart and think of love ones that have passed on and gone with the lord . They are the ones that kept the music going for us to be proud of. |
